Award-Winning Multi-Level Curved Decking in London

We transformed a steep and difficult-to-access London garden with an award-winning multi-level Trex deck, combining improved living space with curved steps, contrasting board patterns, a geometric inlay and an integrated living wall.

Solving a Difficult Access and Layout Problem

The client had struggled to find anyone willing to replace her deteriorating patio. Access beside the London property was extremely restricted, making it difficult to bring in excavation equipment, while the steep front garden added another layer of complexity.

We designed a split-level deck over the existing patio, but the original layout presented a further problem. The upper level was narrow, and the centrally positioned steps restricted the usable space on both the upper and lower patios.

By moving the steps to one side, we opened up both levels and created two far more practical outdoor living areas. This seemingly simple change made a substantial difference to how the entire space could be used.

Project Outline

Location: London

Installation: Multi-level custom curved deck with curved steps and staircase and balustrade.

Curved Steps, Geometric Detailing and a Living Wall

We installed Trex Transcend Gravel Path decking across the upper level, finished with an Island Mist picture-frame border. Fortitude railings were fitted along the front of the deck and continued down the repositioned staircase.

On the lower level, we changed the direction of the deck boards to give the area its own identity. At the centre, we created a descending-square inlay as a geometric focal point, positioned between curved front steps leading into the lower garden.

We also constructed a decked wall between the two levels and incorporated a living green wall, introducing natural foliage and colour into the layered design.

The completed project received two honours at the 2021 Arbordeck Awards, winning Silver for Best Large Trex Deck and Bronze for Best Trex Design Solution.

Frequently asked questions...

Can decking be installed in a garden with very restricted access?

Yes. Limited access makes logistics and construction more challenging, but it does not necessarily prevent a project from going ahead. For this London garden, we designed a solution that could be built despite the steep site and the lack of access for large excavation equipment.

Can moving the position of steps create more usable deck space?

Yes. A centrally positioned staircase can divide a deck and restrict how furniture is arranged on either side. By moving the steps to one edge, we created larger, more practical living areas across both levels.

How can decorative features be incorporated into composite decking?

We can vary board direction, combine colours and introduce custom inlays to give different areas their own identity. On this project, we created a descending-square feature between the curved steps and added a living green wall between the two levels.

What awards did this London Trex deck win?

The project received two honours at the 2021 Arbordeck Awards. It won Silver for Best Large Trex Deck and Bronze for Best Trex Design Solution, recognising both the scale of the installation and the creative response to a difficult site.
