We prepared this garden in Chipstead, Surrey, for a new swim spa before creating a two-tone Millboard surround with built-in bench seating, steps and concealed strip lighting.
The clients came to us through a family recommendation after we had previously completed work for the client’s sister. They had purchased a swim spa but needed considerably more than a deck built around it.
Before delivery, we excavated the site, completed the necessary groundworks and installed a concrete slab to provide a properly prepared base. Once the foundation was ready, the swim spa was delivered into position and we could begin constructing the surrounding deck.
Rather than simply facing off the side of the swim-spa surround, we turned it into a practical built-in bench. This created generous additional seating, with the clients planning to add a large table and use the area for outdoor dining and entertaining.
We installed Millboard Coppered Oak across the main deck, complemented by an Antique Oak picture-frame border. The contrasting tones define the shape of the surround and give the installation a beautifully detailed timber appearance.
Strip lighting was fitted beneath the bench and along the steps, producing a soft glow and bringing the complete Chipstead entertaining area to life after dark. It is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy throughout the day and into the evening.

Usually, the base is completed first and the swim spa is then delivered into its final position. We can build the deck around it afterwards, allowing us to achieve an accurate fit and account for access, drainage and future servicing requirements.
Yes. Seating can be incorporated into the deck structure rather than simply enclosing the side with a plain fascia. On this Chipstead project, we created a broad bench that could be used with a large outdoor dining table.
Yes. Suitable outdoor strip lighting can be positioned beneath benches, steps and deck edges to keep the fittings discreet. Here, the concealed lighting improved visibility and created a soft atmosphere around the swim spa after dark.
