Raised Riverside Decking in Sunbury-on-Thames

This riverside decking project in Sunbury-on-Thames required a structure designed around challenging ground conditions and the risk of flooding. Using galvanised steel supports, Trex Transcend decking and a specially raised base for the hot tub, we created a durable outdoor space overlooking the River Thames.

Rebuilding a Deck Beside the River Thames

The original timber deck had reached the end of its usable life, with the supporting timber posts having rotted through completely.

Because this riverside garden is vulnerable to flooding when the Thames rises, the replacement structure needed to offer much greater durability and long-term protection from the surrounding conditions.

At the client’s request, we installed galvanised steel posts concreted securely into the ground. This provided a robust foundation for the raised deck while reducing the structure’s reliance on timber supports in an area regularly exposed to moisture.

Project Outline

Location: Sunbury-on-Thames, Surrey

Installation: Raised riverside deck, steps and lighting

Raising the Hot Tub Above the Flood Level

The client wanted to incorporate a hot tub within the new outdoor space. To protect it from rising river levels, we constructed a raised concrete base positioned above the garden’s known flood level.

Trex Transcend decking in Island Mist was selected for the main deck and staircase, creating a contemporary grey finish that complements the riverside setting.

Trex lighting was incorporated into the staircase and positioned between the stainless steel balustrade posts. The light shines upwards across the glass panels, improving visibility while creating an impressive atmosphere after dark.

Finally, we built a timber screen around the lower edge of the deck. This conceals the supporting structure and areas underneath while giving the completed installation a clean, carefully finished appearance.

Frequently asked questions...

Why were galvanised steel posts used for this deck?

The original timber posts had rotted completely due to their age and exposure to damp riverside conditions. Galvanised steel posts provided a more durable supporting solution for the replacement structure.

How was the risk of flooding addressed?

The deck was designed around the garden’s known flood conditions. We also constructed a raised concrete base for the hot tub, positioning it above the anticipated flood level.

How was lighting incorporated into the deck?

Trex lighting was installed on the staircase and between the stainless steel balustrade posts. This illuminates the steps and casts light upwards onto the glass panels.

Why was timber screening added beneath the deck?

Raised decks can leave their supporting structure and storage areas visible. The bespoke timber screen conceals these areas and creates a much neater finish around the perimeter.
