Custom Curved Decking in Warlingham

We created two complementary decks outside this newly extended home in Warlingham, Surrey, combining a two-tone upper terrace with a custom-curved lower deck designed around an established tree.

Connecting the Extension with a Sloping Garden

The newly extended house needed an outdoor deck directly beyond the clients’ bi-fold doors. However, an existing brick wall and a sloping path leading towards the lower garden made a single conventional deck unsuitable for the space.

We designed two separate decked areas that responded to the different levels. The upper deck created an immediate outdoor extension to the house, while the lower deck provided a second destination within the garden.

Project Outline

Location: Warlingham, Surrey

Installation: Custom curved multi-level deck on two levels

Straight Lines Above and Custom Curves Below

For the upper terrace, we installed Trex Transcend decking in Tiki Torch with a contrasting Spiced Rum picture-frame border. The warm two-tone combination defined the perimeter and gave the area outside the bi-fold doors a smart, carefully finished appearance.

The clients wanted the lower deck to offer something completely different. We created a bespoke curved design that wrapped around the established tree, then continued the flowing shape through curved steps leading into the lower garden.

The combination of clean lines on the upper deck and organic curves below made the most of this challenging Warlingham site while giving each level its own distinct character.

Frequently asked questions...

Why might a sloping garden benefit from two separate decks?

Two decks can respond more naturally to different garden levels than one large raised structure. On this Warlingham project, the upper deck connected with the house while the curved lower deck created a separate space beside the established tree.

Can decking be installed directly outside bi-fold doors?

Yes. We carefully plan the finished deck height around the door threshold while allowing for the necessary drainage and ventilation. This creates a comfortable transition between the internal living space and the garden.

Can decking steps be built with curved edges?

Yes. Curved steps require bespoke framing, careful setting out and precisely finished edging. For this project, we continued the shape of the lower deck through the steps, creating a flowing route into the lower garden.

Do Tiki Torch and Spiced Rum Trex decking work well together?

Yes. The warm tones complement one another while providing enough contrast to define the deck. We used Tiki Torch across the main upper terrace with Spiced Rum as a darker picture-frame border.
