The existing timber deck had deteriorated and needed to be completely replaced. Its staircase was positioned in the middle of the deck, where it interrupted the available floor space and projected too far into the garden.
Rather than recreating the original layout, we moved the staircase to one end of the structure. This opened up the main deck, improved the connection with the garden and created a much more versatile space for outdoor furniture, dining and entertaining.
The new position also gave the staircase a clearer sense of purpose, allowing it to become part of the overall design instead of dividing the deck into smaller, less practical sections.
This project gave us our first opportunity to install Voyage, an American mineral-based decking product available in two complementary widths.
We combined the narrower 140mm boards with the wider 235mm boards, using both Sierra light grey and Khaya light brown. Varying the board widths and colours introduced visual interest, defined different areas and gave the large surface far more character than a conventional single-board layout.
The same approach was continued across the steps, helping to connect the different parts of the structure and emphasise the bespoke nature of the design.
Black Fortitude railings provided a strong contemporary contrast against the lighter deck colours, while integrated Trex lighting completed the installation and brought the deck to life after dark.

Voyage is an American mineral-based deck board designed as an alternative to conventional timber and composite decking. It combines a contemporary appearance with a durable, low-maintenance construction.
Using both 140mm and 235mm boards allowed us to create visual definition across the deck and steps. The variation breaks up the large surface and helps distinguish different areas without introducing physical divisions.
We installed Trex lighting within the completed structure to highlight the steps and key features after dark. It improves visibility while adding a warm and welcoming evening atmosphere.
