We replaced a rotten raised timber deck at this property in Coulsdon, Surrey, using a Millboard Plas-Pro subframe and Limed Oak decking to create a durable new entertaining area.
The existing timber deck had deteriorated, but the problem extended beyond the surface boards. The supporting joists had also rotted because the subframe was enclosed by the surrounding garden walls.
With very little airflow beneath the deck, damp timber could not dry properly. Over time, the trapped moisture caused the supporting structure to decay and left the complete deck in need of replacement.
To avoid repeating the same problem, we rebuilt the structure using Millboard Plas-Pro recycled plastic lumber. Unlike timber, Plas-Pro does not absorb moisture or rot, making it a far more appropriate choice for this enclosed and poorly ventilated position.
We completed the new raised deck with Millboard Limed Oak boards. Their softly weathered colouring gave the Coulsdon entertaining area a lighter, fresher appearance while the non-timber subframe provided a more durable foundation beneath it.

Yes. Walls can restrict airflow around a raised deck and prevent damp timber from drying properly. The walls do not cause the decay directly, but the enclosed and poorly ventilated conditions can leave the joists exposed to moisture for prolonged periods.
Warning signs can include movement, sagging, loose fixings, soft timber or boards that no longer feel properly supported. However, much of the subframe is hidden, so we need to inspect beneath the surface to understand its true condition.
The deck was enclosed by garden walls, which limited the airflow around its supporting structure. We chose Millboard Plas-Pro because it does not absorb moisture or rot like timber, making it better suited to these challenging conditions.
Yes. Although Plas-Pro will not rot like timber, water should still be able to drain freely from beneath the deck. Good design helps prevent standing water, debris and trapped moisture from affecting the wider installation.
